No More “M” Word
The term is a demeaning slur rooted in the exploitation of people with dwarfism. At LPO we promote accurate, respectful language and the dignity of every person.
Why the term is harmful
The “M” word is a demeaning slur for a person who has dwarfism. Dwarfism is the result of a medical condition. The term originates from the oppression and exploitation of people with dwarfism in nineteenth-century “freak shows.” Even when someone’s intent is not malicious, the word ignores the prejudice, lack of acceptance, and disrespect people with dwarfism continue to face.
In order to gain respect and acceptance, one hurdle an oppressed group must attain is the right of self identification. If necessary, we use "person with dwarfism," or "Little Person" (LP) or "person of short stature" but most people would rather be referred to by their name rather than by a label. Like those who have justifiably obtained control of other words associated with trauma including groups who were previously identified with derogatory slurs, it means we as a community of people with dwarfism need to obtain control of the "M" word. Just as many others before us, it is now our turn for awareness, acceptance and respect.

How to respond if you hear the slur
- Pause and, if safe, explain that the word is a slur with a harmful history.
- Offer a respectful alternative (above).
- Model inclusive language moving forward.
